eThekwini municipality says it is prepared to host a safe and well-co-ordinated MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, despite continued anti-immigration protests in Durban’s central business district.

The sold-out match will be played at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday at 18:00, with concerns that the unrest could affect the eagerly awaited meeting between the Buccaneers and the Brazilians.

In a statement issued on Friday afternoon, the municipality said it was ready to welcome and protect thousands of supporters attending the final.

“Hosting the MTN8 final is a proud moment for Durban and a significant boost for our local economy. Events of this scale drive tourism, support local businesses and affirm our city’s standing as a world-class events destination,” city manager Musa Mbhele said.

The municipality said a comprehensive operational plan had been put in place around the stadium precinct. It will cover traffic management, public safety and crowd control, with the aim of ensuring the event is safe, vibrant and properly co-ordinated.

Durban Metro Police will work alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS) to protect supporters, residents and visitors throughout the match, according to the statement.

Officials also outlined the available parking arrangements for spectators. Parking will be provided at Mastering Field and Suncoast Casino, while on-street parking will be available along Umgeni Road.

A designated drop-off area has also been established on Umgeni Road.

The security assurances come as tensions remain in Durban’s CBD following the continuation of anti-immigration protests on Friday.
