Mulonzo credits God for spotting Thalente Mbatha’s potential early

Thierry Mulonzo says his ability to recognise footballing talent before it becomes obvious to others is a gift from God, citing Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha as one of the players whose potential he identified at a young age.

Mbatha was recruited by Mulonzo for Highlands Park as a youngster, and the former coach said it has been particularly rewarding to see how the player has developed since then.

“Yes, Thalente Mbatha is one of the players we spotted, and we recruited him to Highlands Park as a youngster, and it’s pleasing to see him doing so well,” Mulonzo told the Siya crew.

Mulonzo, who has worked across several levels of South African football, said Mbatha was not an isolated example. He believes his experience has helped him recognise players who have the ability to progress to the highest level of the game.

The coach also pointed to the number of players he has worked with from an early age who later went on to establish themselves as leading figures in football.

“You know, should I just say that this is a God-given eye? You know, God has blessed me to see potential, to see a player long, long, long before even people see,” he said.

Mulonzo believes his opportunities to work throughout the South African football structure have played an important role in developing that insight. He has guided teams through a number of divisions, giving him the chance to assess players at different stages of their careers.

“Maybe because of being there, working for many, many years. And then because I thank God that He has blessed me at all levels of football. Because three times I took teams from SAB to ABC Motsepe, to let’s say NFD, to PSL,” he said.

“So, it’s just God-given talent or eyes of seeing a player, that this one will make it,” the mentor added.

Mulonzo continues talent work with Africa United

Mulonzo’s experience in Mzansi football now informs his work as Sporting Director of Africa United, where he remains involved in identifying and developing young players.

The initiative recently took a group of South African prospects to Spain, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their abilities.

His work across the game has included involvement at multiple levels, while his assessment of emerging players remains central to his role with Africa United.

Mulonzo discusses his football journey, Africa United’s ambitions, his experience in Spain and some of the players he believes could make an impact in the game in the latest edition of Soccer Laduma, edition 1495.
