Zamalek sweep aside Mekele 70 with 43-goal victory in African Handball Champions League
Zamalek recorded a commanding 53-10 victory over Ethiopia’s Mekele 70 in the second round of group matches at the African Handball Champions League.
The Egyptian side established a substantial advantage before half-time, leading 29-4 at the interval. Their superiority continued after the break as they extended the margin to 43 goals by the final whistle.
The tournament is being held in Angola from 4 to 14 October.
The competition organisers were forced to redraw the groups shortly before the event began after two teams withdrew. The changes required the draw for the African Handball Champions League to be conducted again.
Zamalek are in Group B alongside Congolese side J.S.K., Ethiopian club Mechal, Angolan hosts Primeiro de Agosto and Mekele 70 of Ethiopia.
The top two teams in the group will progress directly to the semi-finals, where they will continue their challenge for the title.
Zamalek’s remaining group matches
Zamalek will face J.S.K. of the Democratic Republic of the Congo at 18:00 on 10 October.
They will then play Ethiopia’s Mechal at 14:00 on 11 October.
Al Ahly are the reigning champions, having won the competition in each of the past three editions. They have claimed the title eight times.
Zamalek remain the tournament’s most successful team, with 12 titles. Their most recent success came in 2019.
