Ibrahim Maza injury leaves Bayer Leverkusen sweating

Bayer Leverkusen are facing a late fitness concern over Ibrahim Maza ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga trip to Mainz 05 after the attacking midfielder returned from Algeria duty with an ankle problem.

The 20-year-old was forced off during Algeria’s 2-1 win over Niger after taking a heavy blow to his right ankle and twisting it.

However, initial examinations have provided some relief, with a serious injury largely ruled out and the problem diagnosed as a bruise. His pain has already eased, although he is not yet completely symptom-free.

Maza’s availability will be assessed during Friday’s final training session, when Leverkusen will determine whether his ankle can withstand the demands of competitive action. A painkilling injection is not being considered because the playmaker needs full sensation in his right foot for his technical style of play.

His absence would be a significant setback for Leverkusen. Maza has completed the full 90 minutes in each of his four Bundesliga appearances this season, contributing one goal and one assist.

Should he miss the Mainz clash, Malik Tillman is expected to deputise in the No. 10 role. Christian Kofane, meanwhile, is already ruled out with a thigh injury.
