Turkey to hold talks over Vincenzo Montella future as Arda Turan emerges as leading successor

Vincenzo Montella’s position as Turkey manager is under serious threat, with the Turkish Football Federation set to hold a meeting in the coming days to discuss his future.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, the meeting will determine whether the Italian remains in charge after a difficult international break in the Nations League group stage. Arda Turan, currently manager of Shakhtar Donetsk, is reported to be the leading candidate to replace him.

Montella has managed Turkey since September 2023. He signed a contract extension in June 2025 that was due to keep him in the role until Euro 2028.

However, Turkey lost all four of their matches during the latest international break. They are in Group A of the Nations League alongside France, Italy and Belgium.

Their campaign began with a 1-0 defeat by France in the opening round. Turkey then suffered a heavy 4-1 loss to Italy before being beaten 3-0 by Belgium.

They ended the international window with another defeat by Italy, this time losing 3-1.

Turkish media have reported that Montella would receive compensation equivalent to five months of his salary if he leaves his position. The total payment would be worth 915,000 euros, with the manager earning more than 180,000 euros per month.

Montella has taken charge of Turkey on 40 occasions. His record consists of 21 victories, five draws and 14 defeats.
