Harry Kane matches Peter Shilton’s England appearance record at Wembley

Harry Kane made history for England by winning his 125th cap in Tuesday’s Nations League group match against Czech Republic at Wembley.

The England captain was named in the starting line-up for the fourth-round fixture, bringing him level with the national team appearance record held by former goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

Shilton set the record during his England career between 1970 and 1990. Opta confirmed that Kane had matched the landmark figure, describing the achievement as “historic”.

Kane, who began his international career in 2015, can become England’s outright record appearance holder when the team faces Croatia on 12 November. That match is the penultimate fixture in the group stage.

The 33-year-old already holds several major records for the men’s national team. He is England’s leading goalscorer, with 89 goals, and has made more appearances in major tournaments than any other England player, with 36.

Kane is also the country’s highest scorer in major tournament matches, having scored 21 goals in those competitions.

Further Opta figures show that Kane has captained England in 32 major tournament matches, another national record, while his 31 goals at Wembley are also the most by an England player at the stadium.

His appearance against Czech Republic therefore added another milestone to a list of records already held by the striker, as he moved alongside Shilton at the top of England’s all-time appearance standings.

Kane’s 125th cap came 11 years after his international debut and leaves him one match away from becoming the first England player to surpass Shilton’s total. The opportunity to claim the record outright will come against Croatia if he features on 12 November.
