Free Durban fan zone opens for sold-out MTN8 final

Football supporters without tickets for the 2026 MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns can watch the match for free at an official public viewing area at Durban’s Bay of Plenty.

The final, featuring the South African champions and African kings Mamelodi Sundowns, has sold out at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The city and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) have established the Public Viewing Area (PVA) on the Durban Beachfront to provide fans with a secure alternative and a full match-day experience.

The venue will operate from 12pm to 12am on Saturday, offering entertainment before, during and after the 90-minute final.

“For all individuals planning to come to Durban, the PVA will provide a safe and secure space to watch the final, with entertainment available from 12pm to 12am, extending beyond the 90 minutes of the match,” said Dr Zakhi Mkhize, Acting Director of Commercial Sport and Facilities at eThekwini Municipality.

She said the extended operating hours would allow supporters to remain in the Durban CBD after the game rather than having to leave immediately.

“As such, people attending the PVA have no pressure to leave the CBD immediately but can spend extended time within the outdoor secured space for sport and recreation activities along the beach for almost the entire Saturday,” Dr Mkhize said.

The programme will include live performances by artists, while the pre-match build-up will begin 90 minutes before kick-off. Further entertainment is planned at half-time and after the final.

Safety measures in place

Dr Mkhize said safety arrangements had been prioritised, with the event managed through the Venue Operations Centre Command Centre at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“Managed directly through the Venue Operations Centre (VOC) Command Centre at the stadium, the event has been fully risk-categorised under the Safety at Sports and Recreation Events Act, 2010,” she said.

“Attendees can expect controlled access points, designated event marshals, clearly demarcated zones, and a strong presence of security personnel and emergency services.”

Although she did not specifically state whether supporters would be allowed to bring their own refreshments, Dr Mkhize pointed to the number of nearby food and retail outlets.

“The venue is well serviced and situated close to restaurants, food outlets, retail facilities, and the beachfront’s recreational amenities, allowing fans to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that Durban has to offer while watching the final,” she said.

Durban’s CBD and the stadium precinct are expected to be busy on Saturday. The 6pm MTN8 final follows the second day of the first Test between the Proteas and Australia at Kingsmead, with that match scheduled to run from 9 to 13 October.

The Sharks will be away in Cape Town for their United Rugby Championship derby against the Stormers, which starts at 4pm on Saturday.

The official line-up of artists performing at the PVA will be released soon, Dr Mkhize said.
