Thalente Mbatha backs Abdeslam Ouaddou in Orlando Pirates showboating debate
Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha has defended head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou after the manager came under scrutiny for his firm stance against showboating.
Ouaddou, a former Morocco international, has repeatedly criticised what he considers unnecessary displays on the pitch. During recent cup matches, he described late-game antics as a “circus” and said he would rather resign than accept sterile possession designed to satisfy individual egos instead of helping the team score.
The Orlando Pirates squad contains several skilful players capable of producing moments of flair, to the delight of the Soweto faithful. However, Ouaddou has continued to demand that his players maintain a high level of professionalism and make decisions that benefit the team.
Mbatha said the coach’s comments should not be interpreted as a complete rejection of individual expression. Instead, he believes Ouaddou is primarily focused on ensuring that the team’s style remains effective and direct.
Speaking in comments carried by iDiski Times, the Bafana Bafana midfielder explained the thinking behind the technical bench’s approach.
“Coach doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t like showboating,” Mbatha said. “Coach is a person who likes goals and likes playing direct football, but the moment you score more goals, he’s a person [who understands balance].”
“And coach is one person who is really friendly and able to help youngsters,” he added.
Mbatha also highlighted Ouaddou’s experience at the highest level and his influence on younger players emerging from the club’s development system.
“He played 17 years in the top professional league, so I believe it’s something that will continue. I’m encouraging these youngsters coming through from DDC, and I believe it’s something that coach really wants.”
The midfielder’s comments come as Orlando Pirates prepare for a major test of their discipline and tactical approach against Mamelodi Sundowns.
The two rivals are due to meet in the MTN8 Final, with the championship match scheduled to take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 10 October 2026.
Kick-off is set for 18:00 SAST.
