Rio Ferdinand has criticised Portugal manager Jorge Jesus over his handling of Cristiano Ronaldo during the current international break, claiming the Al Nassr captain was treated in an “inappropriate” manner.
A dispute developed between Jesus and Ronaldo after the Portugal manager decided not to bring the forward on during the Nations League meeting with Norway in round two.
Ronaldo had been asked to warm up with the expectation that he could play for 30 minutes, but Jesus ultimately abandoned the plan. The manager later said the circumstances of the match had led him to change his decision.
Jesus also declined to comment on Ronaldo’s frustration at being left out, insisting that he was the manager and the person in control. He added that Ronaldo would not alter his convictions.
The disagreement resulted in Ronaldo leaving the Portugal camp.
Speaking on his programme, Rio Presents, Ferdinand said: “Cristiano Ronaldo was put in a very bad situation and was treated in an inappropriate way. He has an enormous history in football.”
Ferdinand, who is a Manchester United legend, also questioned Jesus’ approach to the situation.
“Jorge Jesus did not deal with Ronaldo well and chose to treat him in that way, but I cannot find any explanation for it,” he said. “This manager thinks he is Alex Ferguson or Pep Guardiola.”
The former England defender added: “I do not know why he puts himself among the great managers. I cannot find an explanation for it. He should have shown Cristiano Ronaldo the respect he deserved.”
The Football Federation of Portugal is attempting to resolve the dispute and bring Ronaldo back for the next international camp. Its aim is to help the forward end his career in a manner that reflects his standing in the game.
Ronaldo, described in the source as football’s all-time leading goalscorer, has not commented publicly on the dispute so far. He has instead issued a statement saying that he would reveal the truth at a later time.
