Belgium lead France at half-time as Lukebakio strikes in Nations League

Belgium lead France 1-0 at half-time at the Stade de France in the fourth round of Nations League matches, with Dodi Lukebakio giving the visitors the advantage.

Top spot in the group and a place in the quarter-finals are at stake. France began the match as leaders and would strengthen their position with victory, but Belgium have proved more clinical despite being under pressure for much of the opening period.

France started aggressively, with captain Ousmane Dembele creating the first opportunity in the second minute. His effort was repelled, before Maghnes Akliouche forced Belgium goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt into action five minutes later.

The hosts continued to control territory and pressed Belgium deep inside their own half. Bradley Barcola and Esteban Lepaul also tried their luck, but both were denied by a resilient Belgian defence.

The visitors gradually settled after a difficult opening spell and began to find opportunities of their own. Lukebakio had Belgium’s first notable chance in the 22nd minute as the Red Devils looked to make the most of their limited attacking openings.

He made the breakthrough in the 35th minute. Receiving a through ball from Lavia, Lukebakio advanced before finishing with his right foot past Guillaume Restes to put Belgium ahead.

France dominated the first half but were punished for failing to convert their chances, while Belgium showed greater efficiency in front of goal.

Zinedine Zidane will have to rally his players in the dressing room if France are to respond after the interval.
