Pep Guardiola’s strong reaction to Manchester City being found guilty of 114 of 115 alleged financial breaches reflects his determination to protect both his reputation and coaching legacy, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
There is no dispute over Guardiola’s standing as a manager, with AS describing him as potentially one of the greatest coaches in football history. However, the newspaper says his response to the Premier League’s announcement has attracted particular attention.
Within hours of statements being issued by the Premier League and Manchester City, Guardiola expressed his support for the club on social media. He joined current officials and former players in defending Manchester City’s position after the ruling.
Guardiola is also expected to attend Manchester City’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on 14 of the month, in an apparent show of support for the club he led to success over 10 seasons.
AS says Guardiola’s position is not simply about defending Manchester City. It argues that he is also attempting to shield his own image and achievements from the consequences of the case.
The newspaper points out that Guardiola was at the club during only two of the seasons identified as periods under scrutiny: 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. However, the case also concerns managers who led Manchester City before him, including Mark Hughes, Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and Brian Kidd. They, too, benefited from the substantial financial resources made available by the club’s ownership.
According to AS, Guardiola appears particularly sensitive to the issue because his name has become closely associated with the most successful era in Manchester City’s history.
The newspaper also notes that Guardiola renewed his Manchester City contract in 2024, at a time when his spell at the club appeared to be approaching its conclusion. He eventually left in 2026, despite having one year remaining on his contract.
AS believes the investigation and subsequent ruling remained a constant presence throughout that period and became a burden for the Spanish manager. Despite leaving Manchester City, Guardiola has continued to defend the club.
The newspaper’s analysis highlights what it describes as an apparent contradiction in Guardiola’s position. He seems to carry a sense of guilt over a case in which it is not yet known whether he bears any responsibility, while at the same time refusing to allow the allegations and ruling to damage his legacy at Manchester City.
