Real Madrid youngster Tiago Pitarch pushes for first-team return after Castilla revival
After 73 consecutive days without playing a single competitive minute for Real Madrid’s first team, Tiago Pitarch used the latest international break to restart his season and demonstrate that he is ready to compete again.
The 20-year-old followed an agreed plan between Real Madrid and manager Jose Mourinho, designed to rebuild his match fitness after a difficult period. Rather than remain limited to routine training at Valdebebas, Pitarch was given a carefully managed programme of competitive appearances.
With Mourinho’s approval, he played twice for Castilla. He created a goal in the 1-1 draw with Sant Andreu before producing another influential performance in the 2-1 defeat by Alcorcon.
The arrangement was then extended through direct co-ordination between Real Madrid and the Spanish Football Federation. Pitarch joined Spain Under-20s, scoring an impressive left-footed goal in a 2-0 victory over Mexico. He subsequently played another 45 minutes in a further international friendly.
His return continued with Castilla’s derby against Atletico de Madrid at the Di Stefano Stadium. Pitarch made a strong impression in the opposition half, showing both an outstanding presence and the ability to contribute through covering and dribbling.
‘He manages himself’
His coach, Lopez de Lerma, praised the player’s professionalism and the progress he has made since returning from injury.
“Tiago manages himself, and he has returned with the same passion and enthusiasm I have known since his youth-team days,” he said.
“Although recovering from the injury that prevented him from taking part in pre-season was difficult, he has shown enormous improvement in understanding the different aspects of the game and in applying the attacking side of it close to the penalty area.”
Pitarch is now beginning to rediscover the influential leadership role he previously showed with Spain Under-19s, when he was named the European youth championship’s best playmaker. His recent displays have also underlined his qualities as a deep-lying creator and an attacking midfielder capable of operating as a second striker.
Mourinho watches return
Mourinho was in the stands at the Di Stefano Stadium for the derby, giving him the opportunity to assess Pitarch at close quarters. The Portuguese manager was reportedly convinced by the youngster’s technical and physical readiness.
Mourinho had insisted that Pitarch remain at Real Madrid during the summer, cancelling his imminent move to Fulham. He now wants to include the Spanish-Moroccan player in the first-team squad for the forthcoming match against Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Pitarch’s recent performances have persuaded Mourinho that he possesses the individual ability and goalscoring efficiency to change the course of matches once he is given the manager’s confidence.
