Thulani Mabaso moves closer to Kaizer Chiefs return after reserve-team comeback

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thulani Mabaso has moved closer to a return to first-team football after playing competitively for the club’s reserve side following a long-term injury lay-off.

Mabaso featured in Amakhosi’s 3-2 victory over Orlando Pirates in the opening match of the DStv Diski Challenge at Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban over the weekend.

The appearance gave the midfielder his first competitive minutes since he suffered the injury several months ago. It was also an important part of his rehabilitation programme as he begins to rebuild his match fitness.

Chiefs’ reserve side opened up a three-goal advantage before being reduced to 10 men and holding on for the win.

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr confirmed that Mabaso’s return represented a significant stage in his recovery.

“It was truly a gallant effort by the boys in their opening fixture,” Motaung Jr told the club’s official website.

“We were also happy to see senior team midfielder Thulani Mabaso play his first competitive match since picking up an injury a few months ago. His return means he is getting closer to match readiness for the first team.”

Mabaso has now completed the required medical checks and returned to competitive action at reserve level. He will continue to be assessed by the senior technical team as Chiefs prepare for their upcoming domestic fixtures.

Kaizer Chiefs’ next match is a league meeting with Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium on 17 October. Mabaso could be available for selection for that fixture, depending on the outcome of his continued recovery and monitoring.
