Klopp hails Germany’s ‘outstanding’ display in first Nations League victory

Jurgen Klopp praised Germany’s complete performance after the former Liverpool manager secured his first win in charge with a 2-0 victory over Serbia at the Allianz Arena.

Germany had begun their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands before suffering a 1-0 defeat by Greece. However, they responded with a much-improved showing in Munich to claim their first success under Klopp.

Asked which part of the performance had pleased him most, Klopp said: “Everything! The opening stages, the middle part, the ending.”

The Germany coach was especially satisfied with the way his players performed without possession. He also praised the quality and confidence they showed in attack after recovering the ball.

“The positioning in the box was incredible,” said Klopp. “Everyone was there in our pressing moments. The last line defended really well by pushing up.”

Germany’s defensive organisation allowed them to apply pressure high up the pitch, while their performance in possession gave them control of the match.

“Without the ball, it was outstanding, and with the ball, we played wonderful football,” Klopp added. “That has to be our baseline.”

The result also provided a significant lift for Florian Wirtz, who delivered one of his strongest performances of the season.

The 23-year-old created Germany’s opening goal for Tom Bischof before adding a second himself with an impressive finish in the second half.

Wirtz had faced criticism over his form at Liverpool at the start of the season, but Klopp believes the attacking midfielder’s display for Germany will have been warmly received at his club.

“The way we want to play suits ‘Flo’ Wirtz,” Klopp said. “I think everyone in Liverpool is very happy today. The boy is brimming with the joy of playing and has worked incredibly hard.”

Germany’s victory moved them on from their earlier setback against Greece, who are the Group A2 leaders. Klopp’s team will have the chance to make further progress when they travel to Greece on Sunday.

The match will be Germany’s next opportunity to build on their improved display against Serbia and respond directly to their previous defeat.
