Joao Felix makes Portugal history as Ronaldo misses Nations League win

Joao Felix scored in his third consecutive match for Portugal as they beat Denmark 4-2 in Copenhagen, continuing their perfect start to the Nations League under Jorge Jesus.

The Al-Nassr forward completed the scoring in the 87th minute at Parken Stadium, powering Diogo Dalot’s low cross into the net to secure a notable victory for the visitors.

According to statistics account MisterChip, it was the first time Felix had scored in three successive appearances for Portugal. He had previously found the net against Wales and Norway before adding his third goal against Denmark.

The run has come in Portugal’s opening three matches since Jorge Jesus took charge of the national side. Jesus had previously managed Felix at Al-Nassr.

Felix’s goal also came in a match Portugal played without their captain and leading scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo left the squad’s camp in Denmark on Wednesday evening after Jesus discussed a disagreement between the pair over the player’s absence from the previous game against Norway.

Stats Foot reported that Portugal had scored four goals away from home without Ronaldo for the first time in 18 years. The previous occasion was their 4-0 victory against Malta on 6 September 2008.

Portugal have won all three of their Nations League matches under Jesus, collecting nine points from victories over Wales, Norway and Denmark. Their latest success leaves them in a strong position in the group.

Jesus’ side will face Norway again on Sunday in the fourth round of Nations League fixtures. Victory would guarantee Portugal direct qualification for the semi-finals, with no need to wait for the final two rounds.
