Portugal fans split between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus during Denmark victory

Portugal supporters showed their backing for Jorge Jesus and Cristiano Ronaldo during a 4-2 win over Denmark in the UEFA Nations League, as tensions between the pair continued to dominate attention.

The match at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on Thursday was Portugal’s first since a dispute involving Ronaldo, captain of Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, and his manager Jesus.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday, a day before the meeting with Denmark, following the latest development in the disagreement.

Images published by Bleacher Report showed some Portugal fans wearing shirts carrying the message “We love you Jesus” in English, signalling their support for the manager.

Other supporters displayed a message featuring Ronaldo’s name alongside a heart, making clear that the captain also retained backing among the travelling fans.

Portugal have made a perfect start to their Nations League campaign under Jesus. They have collected nine points from three victories against Wales, Norway and Denmark and have not dropped points in any of their matches under the manager.

Jesus’ side will face Norway again on Sunday in the fourth round of the Nations League group stage. A win would secure direct qualification for the semi-finals, without Portugal needing to wait for the final two rounds.

Jesus is expected to give his full account of what happened between him and Ronaldo after the Norway match. He indicated before the Denmark fixture that he would explain the dispute in detail once that game had been played.
