BREAKING NEWS: Carlos Queiroz and GFA mutually agree to terminate contract

Carlos Queiroz has left his position as head coach of the Ghana national team after mutually agreeing with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

The Portuguese coach’s departure was confirmed by the GFA on Thursday following discussions between both parties, bringing his tenure as Black Stars head coach to an end.

Queiroz, in a statement released after the decision, said the termination was reached in a spirit of mutual respect and that both parties agreed it was the most appropriate course of action under the circumstances.

The decision follows a disappointing start to Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars suffered a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before returning home and suffering a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The results have left Ghana without a point from their opening two matches of the qualifying campaign and increased pressure on the technical team.

Queiroz’s departure also comes after Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The Black Stars progressed from the group stage but were eliminated in the Round of 32 following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

Ghana had earlier recorded a 1-0 victory over Panama, drawn 0-0 with England and lost 2-1 to Croatia in the group stage.

In his farewell message, Queiroz thanked the GFA, its President, his technical staff and the Black Stars players for their support during his time in charge.

The 73-year-old also called on Ghanaians to continue supporting the national team, insisting that the players possess the talent and potential to achieve success.

“I leave with respect, gratitude and pride,” Queiroz said.

He added: “Ghana comes first. The Black Stars come first. Ghanaian football comes first.”

The GFA is now expected to begin the process of determining the next steps for the Black Stars, with Ghana’s AFCON 2027 qualification campaign requiring an immediate turnaround.
