Yoane Wissa reaches landmark in RD Congo’s scoring history

Yoane Wissa has moved into the top three of RD Congo’s all-time leading scorers after continuing his strong international form in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Newcastle forward scored against Zimbabwe to take his total for the Leopards to 14 goals, putting him level with Shabani Nonda and Tresor Mputu in third place.

Wissa, who turned 30 recently, has established himself as one of the leading figures in RD Congo’s history. The former Brentford player also came through the academy at Chateauroux.

His latest achievement follows an impressive World Cup 2026 campaign, during which his three goals helped RD Congo. He has maintained that form in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, where he has become the focal point of the attack.

With Cedric Bakambu unavailable, Wissa has taken on the role of centre-forward. He has responded with two goals and one assist since the start of the qualifying campaign.

The goal against Zimbabwe has also changed the complexion of the national team’s scoring records. Dieumerci Mbokani remains the leading scorer with 22 goals, while Bakambu is second on 21.

Wissa is now level with Nonda and Mputu on 14 goals, giving him a place among the three most prolific scorers in RD Congo’s history.

His influence has been particularly clear in his recent appearances for the national team. Across his past six matches for the Leopards in all competitions, Wissa has contributed to six goals, scoring five and providing one assist.

That run underlines his importance to the side as RD Congo continue their qualifying campaign. His recent goalscoring form has also allowed him to close the gap on the two players above him in the rankings, although Mbokani and Bakambu remain clear at the top.

Wissa’s next opportunity to add to his tally will come when RD Congo play a friendly against Uganda. The match will give the Newcastle striker another chance to strengthen his position in the national team’s record books.
