Eduardo Camavinga reveals what he must do to win back Real Madrid starting spot

Eduardo Camavinga knows consistency is the key to reclaiming his place in Real Madrid’s starting XI after falling down Jose Mourinho’s midfield pecking order.

The 23-year-old is using France duty this month to build up his match fitness following a frustrating start to the 2026/27 campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Camavinga missed a significant part of Real Madrid’s preseason after suffering a summer injury, leaving him playing catch-up once the new campaign began. His limited involvement has since seen him slip behind other midfield options under Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach welcomed Zinedine Zidane’s decision to include Camavinga in France’s current UEFA Nations League squad, viewing the international break as an opportunity for the midfielder to gain valuable minutes.

Camavinga has made only two starts for Madrid so far this season and was again limited to a substitute appearance for France in their 1-0 victory away to Turkey last week.

The midfielder played 12 minutes in that match but remains focused on using his opportunities to regain his place at club level.

‘Consistency is probably what I’m missing’

Camavinga has identified the area he believes needs the most improvement if he is to force his way back into Mourinho’s plans.

Rather than pointing to his injury or lack of opportunities, the French international admits he must produce consistently when given the chance.

“Consistency is probably what I’m missing for Real Madrid.

“I’ve had good performances before, but it’s consistency that matters. I need to stay focused on the pitch and make fewer mistakes.”

His comments underline the challenge facing Camavinga as he attempts to rebuild his momentum after an interrupted preseason.

The midfielder has previously established himself as an important part of Madrid’s squad, but his current situation means he must take advantage of every opportunity to demonstrate that he deserves a regular starting role.

Camavinga faces midfield battle

With only two starts under Mourinho this term, Camavinga faces competition for minutes once he returns to Madrid.

His immediate priority is therefore to regain full match sharpness and maintain his level whenever he is selected.

The France camp provides an opportunity to do exactly that, with international minutes allowing him to continue his recovery from the injury that disrupted his preparations.

His performances with France could therefore prove important as he attempts to return to regular action for Real Madrid and re-establish himself in Mourinho’s midfield plans.
