Algeria release Amine Gouiri after thigh injury

Amine Gouiri has been released from Algeria’s squad after suffering a left-thigh injury during the 3-1 victory over Zambia.

The Olympique de Marseille forward was substituted in the 20th minute of Friday’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, with Amin Chiakha coming on in his place.

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) confirmed Gouiri’s departure in a statement, following reports in the local media.

Gouiri, 26, underwent further medical examinations on Saturday. The tests showed that his injury would prevent him from taking part in Algeria’s next two fixtures.

The Fennecs travel to face Burundi on Tuesday in the second round of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying. They will then play a friendly against Niger on 6 October at Tizi Ouzou.

Gouiri has been given permission to leave the national team camp and will continue his treatment in France. He has made six appearances for OM this season, starting five matches and scoring four goals while providing one assist.

His absence creates an opportunity for Chiakha to lead the attack in the coming matches. The 20-year-old Rosenborg striker replaced Gouiri against Zambia and could be selected from the start for Algeria’s next fixtures.

Monsef Bakrar is another option for the Algeria coaching staff. The 25-year-old Al Ahly forward was an unused substitute in the victory over Zambia but could now be given more playing time to demonstrate his ability.

Gouiri is the second player to leave the Algeria camp after the win in Blida. Rayan Ait-Nouri was previously sent home by Brahim Hemdani because of his attitude during Friday evening’s match.

The victory over Zambia was Algeria’s first game in the qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
