Brahim Diaz injury ‘not serious’ as Morocco assess Real Madrid midfielder

Brahim Diaz’s injury has been described as “not serious” by Morocco manager Mohamed Ouahbi, although the Real Madrid player remains a doubt for Monday’s meeting with Lesotho.

Diaz missed Morocco’s 2-0 victory over Gabon after reporting pain before kick-off. However, he stayed with the Lions of the Atlas and is continuing his treatment with the national team’s medical staff rather than returning to his club.

Speaking at a news conference after the win, Ouahbi said medical examinations, including an MRI scan, had provided reassuring results.

“Brahim Diaz suffers from an injury that is not serious, and we will continue his treatment in the hope of recovering him as quickly as possible, inshallah,” said the Morocco manager.

Diaz had already arrived at the international camp feeling discomfort. As a precaution, Ouahbi called up Ilias Akhomach, while the Real Madrid player underwent further assessment.

He will be examined again in the coming days to establish whether he is fit enough to feature in Morocco’s second match of the international window.

Morocco face Lesotho on Monday, 29 September in South Africa, only three days after their opening victory against Gabon. Ouahbi has not guaranteed Diaz’s involvement and is not expected to take any unnecessary risks with the player.

Nevertheless, the decision to leave Diaz out against the Panthers does not appear to signal a lengthy absence. The latest update from Ouahbi suggests that the injury is unlikely to keep him out for an extended period, although his availability will depend on how he responds to treatment.

Morocco made a strong start without their number 10. Noussair Mazraoui and Soufiane Rahimi scored to secure victory, while several younger players were given valuable playing time.

Ali Maamar, Yassir Zabiri and Abdellah Ouazane were among those to feature. Ouazane, aged 17, helped create Morocco’s second goal only a few minutes after making his first appearance for the national team.

The match also allowed Ouahbi to continue the gradual renewal of his squad. The manager has reiterated his intention to give opportunities to young players while developing a side capable of competing for titles.

For Diaz, the immediate priority is to continue his recovery and wait for medical clearance. His participation against Lesotho remains possible, but a decision will be based on his progress before the match.

For now, Morocco have received encouraging initial news about the Real Madrid player.
