Gambia score late to beat Somalia in 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

Gambia came from behind to beat Somalia 2-1 in a dramatic finish at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, giving the Scorpions a winning start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Jonathan McKinstry’s side made the stronger start and took control during the opening period, but the match became increasingly tense during the final 15 minutes of the first half.

Somalia captain Abdulsamed Abdullahi was booked, followed shortly afterwards by Gambia’s Abubakr Barry. McKinstry responded at half-time with two substitutions, sending on Muhammed Badamosi and Suleiman Camara.

Gambia appeared to be managing the game after the interval, but Somalia found a way back into the contest in the 72nd minute. Bilal Njie equalised, rewarding his side’s efforts and shifting the momentum of the match.

The Scorpions responded quickly. Badamosi, introduced at the break, restored Gambia’s lead in the 83rd minute to complete the comeback.

Gambia held on through the closing stages to secure three valuable points and make an ideal start in a demanding Group C. Their next fixture will be away to Ghana in Accra.

Somalia leave the match without a point, but their performance underlined the progress being made by a national team competing at this level for the first time in its history.
