Herve Koffi urges Burkina Faso newcomers to settle ahead of Benin qualifier

Two days before Burkina Faso host Benin at the Stade du 4-Aout, Etalons captain Herve Koffi has called on the team’s established players to help the newcomers adapt, while offering his support to Adamo Nagalo during what he described as a very difficult period.

Koffi said the new players should receive the same welcome that he and his team-mates were given when they first joined the national squad.

“They must above all be welcomed properly, because we were also new players once. The older players welcomed us well, and I believe it is our duty to do the same for those who are arriving,” he said.

“I have always said that you can consider there to be no new players. From the moment you are selected and join the group, you immediately become an experienced member.”

The goalkeeper acknowledged that playing at the Stade du 4-Aout can be a significant occasion for those making their first appearances for Burkina Faso, and said the squad would work to ensure they were not overwhelmed by the occasion.

“It is true that playing at the Stade du 4-Aout is something special. We will try to motivate them and talk to them so that they are not under pressure on the day,” Koffi said.

His comments came as Burkina Faso prepare to begin their campaign in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The captain said the priority was to create the right conditions for the younger players to show their ability and approach the match with confidence.

Koffi also dedicated a message of support to Adamo Nagalo, who is absent for the fixture and is facing a difficult situation.

“On behalf of the group, I would like to send a message of support to Adamo Nagalo. He is going through a very, very difficult time. We want to give him a fine victory,” he said.

“This match is very important and we must remain focused.”

The captain again stressed the responsibility of the senior players towards those joining the national team, while recognising the demands of playing at the country’s main stadium.

“There are many young players and we have a duty to welcome them properly, just as we were welcomed. Playing at the Stade du 4-Aout is not easy, especially for newcomers. We will try to encourage and motivate them,” he added.

Koffi said the group’s ambition was to make a positive start, progress together and secure qualification as soon as possible.

“So that together we can go as far as possible and qualify as early as possible. That is truly my wish. I know it is everyone’s wish too, and I hope we can achieve it.”
