Yan Diomande’s impact increases pressure on Vinicius at Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s 2-1 derby defeat by Atletico has intensified questions over Vinicius’ place in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up, with Yan Diomande making an immediate impact after replacing the Brazil forward.

Vinicius produced another subdued display on Sunday and was withdrawn at the start of the second half after Dean Huijsen was sent off. Mourinho responded by introducing Diomande and Antonio Rudiger as he reorganised his side, although the changes could not prevent Real from losing.

The decision has added to a debate that was already developing among Real Madrid supporters and football observers over Vinicius’ performances this season.

Vinicius’ form under scrutiny

The 25-year-old’s output has been questioned since the campaign began. An assessment of his performances highlights a shooting accuracy rate, big-chance conversion record and dribbling volume that are close to the lowest levels of his career.

His lack of influence against Atletico was particularly noticeable during the opening half, before Mourinho decided to make changes following Huijsen’s dismissal. The Brazilian’s substitution inevitably renewed discussion about whether his position in the team should remain secure.

Diomande, meanwhile, is beginning to provide a different attacking option. The 19-year-old joined Real Madrid from RB Leipzig this summer for 125m euros, with a further 15m euros potentially payable in bonuses, making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

That price tag brings significant expectations, but his early appearances have offered encouragement. Against Atletico, the Ivory Coast forward completed seven dribbles, touched the ball 19 times in the final third and repeatedly used his acceleration to challenge defenders.

He did not provide an assist and saw one attempt saved by Jan Oblak, yet his willingness to carry the ball and take on opponents gave Real a form of attacking threat that had been missing earlier in the match.

Those qualities explain why some supporters are calling for Diomande to be given a more regular starting role rather than being used primarily as an impact substitute.

The decision, however, is not simply a choice between Vinicius and Diomande. Mourinho must also find a balance in an attack that includes Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler, as well as the two players at the centre of the current discussion. Even before the derby, selecting the right combination had been one of the Portuguese manager’s main challenges.

Mourinho has recently stressed the competition within his squad and the importance of managing rotations. He continues to view Vinicius as a player capable of rediscovering his efficiency when the biggest moments arrive.

Diomande’s promising cameos do not yet provide enough evidence to establish a new hierarchy at Real Madrid. Equally, Vinicius’ status and history with the club cannot protect him indefinitely if his performances remain below expectations.

Mourinho must now decide whether Vinicius should retain his place automatically or whether Diomande has earned a greater opportunity, and which attacking combination can make Real Madrid more dangerous in the final third.
