Cole Palmer to miss England squad as Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo face doubts

Cole Palmer is set to be left out of the England squad for September’s international break, with Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo also uncertain to be involved, according to The Athletic.

Palmer, 24, is expected to be omitted as part of a workload-management decision. The Chelsea forward played in his side’s 3-0 defeat by Brentford earlier this week.

England manager Thomas Tuchel had recalled Palmer to the national team after he was left out of the squad for the last World Cup.

Rashford’s participation is now in doubt after the Manchester United forward suffered a thigh injury. The Athletic reported that the problem is one he has been dealing with since the World Cup.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick said after his side’s draw with Fulham earlier this week: “We had to take Rashford off because he was having some issue.”

Rashford was replaced in the 77th minute, while Mainoo played for 80 minutes before being substituted.

England will play four matches during the international break, beginning with a meeting with World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on 26 September.

Tuchel’s side will then face Czechia in Prague on 29 September before playing Croatia on 3 October. England’s final match of the break will be against Czechia at Wembley on 6 October.
