Benin call up Latvia-based striker Joseph Ede Oloko after 26-goal season

Benin have handed a first international call-up to Nigeria-born striker Joseph Ede Oloko after his outstanding season in Latvia, with coach Gernot Rohr selecting him for the opening two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and a high-profile friendly against Argentina.

The 25-year-old is the only new player in Rohr’s squad after scoring 26 goals and providing six assists in 30 appearances in all competitions this season. His inclusion comes as Benin captain Steve Mounie is ruled out of the gathering through injury.

Oloko, who is eligible to represent both Nigeria and Benin, has taken an unconventional route to the international stage. Born in Lagos, he developed at Nigerian academy 36 Lion FC before moving to AS Cotonou in Benin.

He later gained experience in the Czech Republic before continuing his career in Latvia. Oloko spent the beginning of 2026 on loan at FK Tukums 2000 and returned to FK Liepaja in June, maintaining his prolific form and drawing the attention of the Guepards coaching staff.

The call-up also reflects Rohr’s detailed knowledge of Nigerian football. The Franco-German coach managed the Super Eagles between 2016 and 2021 and is familiar with the depth of talent produced by Nigeria, including players based in different countries around the world.

By selecting Oloko before any potential approach from Nigeria, Rohr has given Benin the opportunity to secure the striker’s international future. If Oloko plays in either of the two competitive fixtures, his international career will, barring a highly unusual regulatory scenario, be tied to Benin.

Benin begin 2027 campaign against Burkina Faso

Benin will start their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou on 25 September. They will then face Mauritania four days later in a second fixture that will already carry significance in the race for qualification.

The Guepards will have little room for error in those opening matches. Their squad will also be without Olivier Verdon, who is suspended.

The September fixtures will be followed by a meeting with Argentina at estadio Monumental on 6 October, bringing the Benin squad into one of the most prominent matches of the year. The game is expected to accompany Lionel Messi’s announced final international appearance for the Albiceleste.

Oloko could therefore move from domestic football in Latvia to a meeting with the world champions within a matter of weeks. He must first turn his call-up into a debut, but with 26 goals this season and Mounie absent, the forward has been given a timely opportunity to establish himself with the Guepards.
