Malatsi questions Da Cruz tactics after Chiefs drop more points

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabiso Malatsi has criticised Fernando Da Cruz’s tactical approach after Amakhosi surrendered another lead and were held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City.

The result was the third time Chiefs had dropped points in their opening five matches of the season. They appeared set to claim victory after taking the lead, but Polokwane City scored late to earn a point in the weekend meeting.

Chiefs had also been unable to protect a lead against rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, drawing 1-1 after going ahead. They then recovered from behind to draw 2-2 with Richards Bay.

Da Cruz has consistently used a system built around three centre-backs and wing-backs since taking charge. The coach has retained that shape even when Chiefs have faced teams regarded as smaller opponents.

Some Chiefs supporters have viewed the formation as overly defensive, and Malatsi believes the system does not suit a club of Amakhosi’s stature.

“The coach’s formation is shocking. You can’t, at a big team like Chiefs play with five defenders, it won’t work,” Malatsi told KickOff.

“At a big club it’s either 4-4-2 or 4-3-3, that’s the style of Chiefs. This thing of five (or three at the back) does not work.”

Malatsi also pointed to the progress of several younger players, arguing that the squad has attacking options which could be better used within a different tactical structure.

“These youngsters are promising. Even the likes of (Lebohang) Maboe, (Siphesihle) Ndlovu have raised their hand,” he said.

“Ndlovu now is no longer just defensive, he can be offensive, he creates.”

Despite his concerns over the formation and Chiefs’ defensive performances, Malatsi said Da Cruz deserved credit for giving young players opportunities.

“The players are coming well but what I like about him (Da Cruz) is that he believes in these youngsters, it is just that our defence is poor,” he added.

Chiefs are fourth in the Betway Premiership standings. Their next opportunity to improve their points tally comes on Sunday afternoon, when they visit Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium.
