Aston Villa claim first Premier League win as Tottenham suffer another defeat

Aston Villa secured their first Premier League victory of the season with a 3-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur, deepening the pressure on Spurs after another damaging result.

Johan Manzambi opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time on his first start for Aston Villa, before Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendia struck after the break to put the visitors in command.

The £50-million summer signing reacted quickest from close range after Tottenham surrendered possession in their own penalty area. The mistake came while Spurs defender Micky van de Ven was temporarily off the pitch receiving treatment for a gash under his eye.

Tottenham thought they had levelled early in the second half when Mohammed Kudus found the net, but the goal was disallowed after Andy Robertson was judged to have been offside during the build-up.

Aston Villa extended their lead in the 67th minute. Jackson finished calmly to leave Tottenham facing a demanding task, and Buendia then added a third with 11 minutes remaining.

The midfielder produced a powerful strike from 22 yards which flew into the top corner, completing a miserable afternoon for the home side.

Conor Gallagher gave Tottenham hope by scoring their first goal of the campaign late in the match. Jan Paul van Hecke added a second deep into injury time, but Spurs could not find a late equaliser.

The result lifted Aston Villa to 15th in the table with four points from five games. Tottenham remained in the relegation zone on two points after suffering another defeat.
