Aston Villa claim first Premier League win as Tottenham Hotspur suffer another defeat

Aston Villa secured their first Premier League victory of the season with a 3-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, leaving Spurs in the relegation zone after another damaging defeat.

Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendia scored for the visitors, while Tottenham’s late response was not enough to prevent a result that deepened the pressure on their season.

Manzambi, a £50-million summer signing, made his first start for Aston Villa and opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time. The 20-year-old reacted quickest inside the Tottenham penalty area after the hosts lost possession, taking advantage of a defensive lapse while Spurs defender Micky van de Ven was temporarily off the pitch receiving treatment for a gash under his eye.

Tottenham were given a possible route back into the match early in the second half when Mohammed Kudus found the net. However, the goal was disallowed after Andy Robertson was judged to have been offside in the build-up.

Aston Villa then strengthened their grip on the contest in the 67th minute. Jackson finished clinically to put the visitors 2-0 ahead and leave Tottenham facing another difficult afternoon.

Buendia added a third with 11 minutes of normal time remaining, sending a powerful effort into the top corner from 22 yards. His strike capped a miserable performance for the home side and prompted Spurs supporters to begin streaming towards the exits.

Tottenham did manage two late goals, but neither altered the outcome. Conor Gallagher scored Spurs’ first goal of the campaign late on before Jan Paul van Hecke added another deep into injury time.

The late rally offered little consolation for Tottenham, who remain on two points from five games and inside the relegation zone.

For Aston Villa, the victory ended their wait for a first league win of the campaign and lifted them to 15th in the table with four points from five games.
