Kane reaches 100 Bundesliga goals as Bayern thrash Union Berlin

Harry Kane became the fastest player to score 100 Bundesliga goals as Bayern Munich swept aside Union Berlin 7-0 on Friday.

The England captain reached the landmark in his 98th league appearance, before adding a second goal to take his total to 101. He broke the previous record, set by Cologne’s Dieter Mueller in 1977, by 31 matches.

Kane has also been the quickest Bayern player to reach 75, 100 and 150 goals in all competitions. His double against Union means he has scored 156 goals in 156 matches for the club in domestic and international football.

“I’m very proud to reach 101 Bundesliga goals,” Kane told Sky Germany.

“In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve loved every second of it. When I’m playing with these players – Michael (Olise), Luis (Diaz) and Jamal (Musiala), I’m going to get chances.

“To have more goals than games is obviously a great stat to have.”

Kane’s Bayern contract expires at the end of the season, but he said discussions over his future were continuing.

“I’m extremely happy here,” he said. “The talks are ongoing and they’ll be ongoing for the near future. You can see the way I’m playing and the way I connect with the fans.

“Munich in 2028? Maybe. It’ll be a special one.”

Although Kane’s record was the headline achievement, Michael Olise was the outstanding performer in Munich, scoring a hat-trick against winless Union.

Bayern, wearing a special kit marking the start of Oktoberfest, took control in the 18th minute. Alphonso Davies pulled the ball back to Jamal Musiala on the edge of the area and the Germany international struck a powerful shot into the net.

Kane converted from the penalty spot in the 39th minute after Olise was fouled. Olise then made it 3-0 before the interval with a superb first-time finish into the top corner from outside the area.

Union briefly threatened early in the second half, forcing Manuel Neuer into two saves. His first denied Janik Haberer, whose missed opportunity proved to be the visitors’ best chance.

Olise turned provider in the 54th minute, delivering an excellent cross from the right for Kane to glance in his second.

Ismael Saibari came on shortly after the hour mark and scored his first Bayern goal seven minutes later, collecting the ball from Davies before shrugging off his marker and finishing strongly.

Olise added two more goals in the space of six minutes. He rounded Ronnow for his second, then completed his hat-trick with a superb curling strike from outside the box.

“We’re a bit sad that there’s now a short break coming up, as we might lose our rhythm a little,” Bayern sporting director Max Eberl told reporters.

“We wanted to go into the international break with an impressive result. We managed that.

“The team showed that when we play at that level, it’s hard to keep up with us.”

The victory was Bayern’s biggest since their 8-1 win over Wolfsburg in January and moved the champions top of the table for now.

Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund, the only teams with 100% records this season, can reclaim first place on Saturday against Eintracht Frankfurt and Stuttgart respectively.
