Mark Flekken named Bayer Leverkusen’s Europa League goalkeeper

Mark Flekken will be Bayer Leverkusen’s first-choice goalkeeper in the Europa League, while Janis Blaswich is expected to be given opportunities in the DFB-Pokal.

The 33-year-old will begin his European campaign when Leverkusen host Slovenian side NK Celje in their opening match.

Leverkusen’s league-phase schedule also includes several clubs from outside Europe’s traditional top-five leagues, alongside Ligue 1 sides Marseille and Lyon.

Flekken’s selection comes after a challenging start to his Bundesliga season. He conceded five goals in Leverkusen’s first two away matches, but coach Carles Martinez has chosen to retain his confidence in the goalkeeper for Wednesday’s game.

“As for the goalkeeper, I have decided that Mark (Flekken) will play on Wednesday,” Martinez said.

The manager said errors would not automatically cost a player his place in the side.

“Mistakes are part of football. That’s something I firmly believe in. If someone makes a mistake, that’s no reason to say, ‘come on, you’re out!’”

Martinez also praised Flekken’s professionalism and his influence within the squad.

“I think he’s a great professional. He’s doing incredible things. He’s the first one to be there. He’s the first to push for us to get better as a squad. So I am very satisfied in many ways. My philosophy is to stand by my players, especially after mistakes.”

The decision marks a change from the system used by former Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

Under Alonso, Matej Kovar was the designated goalkeeper for cup competitions, while Lukas Hradecky started Bundesliga matches. Martinez’s plan creates a more defined division between European competition and the domestic cup.

Flekken will therefore handle Leverkusen’s Europa League fixtures, with Blaswich waiting for his chance in the DFB-Pokal. The arrangement gives each goalkeeper a specific competition in which to establish a regular role.
