Bayer Leverkusen rule out move for former France striker Karim Benzema

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has rejected reports linking the Bundesliga club with Karim Benzema.

The former France striker became a free agent in late August after ending his contract with Al-Hilal by mutual consent. His availability led to speculation that the 38-year-old could be weighing up a return to European football.

Reports on Monday suggested Benzema had been in contact with Leverkusen. The rumours gained further prominence after he was seen following the club’s Instagram account.

However, Rolfes dismissed the possibility of the experienced forward joining the German side when questioned by BILD.

“Our squad is complete,” he said.

The brief response indicates Leverkusen do not intend to sign another attacking player, despite Benzema’s current availability.

Benzema remains one of the most decorated forwards of his generation. He spent 14 years at Real Madrid, where he established himself as one of the club’s leading goalscorers and won major honours before moving to Al-Hilal.

There is nevertheless no indication that Leverkusen are interested in bringing him to the Bundesliga at this stage.

Benzema’s next destination remains undecided following his departure from Al-Hilal, leaving the 38-year-old to consider his options as he looks for his next club.
