Bayern Munich assess Luis Diaz workload after drop in form

Bayern Munich are examining Luis Diaz’s recent dip in form, with fatigue one of several concerns being considered by the Bundesliga club.

The Colombia winger has been discussed internally after struggling to reach his usual level in recent matches. He started on the bench for Sunday’s 2-1 victory over SV Elversberg, following Bayern’s goalless draw away to Schalke.

Vincent Kompany brought Diaz on while the match remained undecided, hoping the 29-year-old’s pace and movement would help Bayern find a way through.

Diaz had an opportunity to set up Harry Kane but chose not to pass to the England striker, missing the chance to create a promising opening.

Kompany nevertheless continues to trust Diaz’s ability to unsettle opposing defences. The Bayern manager said the winger’s contribution remains valuable, even though his end product has not been as sharp as expected.

“It’s all about finishing. His energy consistently creates danger,” Kompany said after the win.

“You have to create those chances, and he does that time and again with his deep runs and his activity.”

The comments underline the importance Bayern attach to Diaz’s work rate and off-the-ball movement. Although his finishing has come under scrutiny, his willingness to make runs and generate opportunities continues to be viewed positively by Kompany.

Bayern are also assessing the amount of football Diaz has played. He has been involved almost continuously over the past 22 months, including at the 2026 World Cup.

His workload could become a significant consideration during the next international break. Colombia are due to play matches in the United States and make another trip to Australia in November.

The travel involved, along with time-zone changes and the additional international fixtures, may prompt Bayern to consider giving Diaz a longer period of rest.

The winger’s next opportunity to respond will come on Friday, when Bayern host Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena in their next Bundesliga fixture. Kompany will hope Diaz can begin to recover the form that made him such an influential attacking option.
