Como make stunning Champions League debut with 4-1 win over RB Leipzig

Como began their first-ever Champions League campaign with a statement victory, beating RB Leipzig 4-1 at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on Thursday.

Only a little over two years after playing in Serie B, Como produced an assertive performance on their European debut, overwhelming Leipzig with their pace, aggression and intensity.

The hosts almost made the perfect start when Anastasios Douvikas and Nico Paz tested Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt inside the opening 15 minutes. Vandevoordt made two important stops to keep the score level.

Como continued to press and were rewarded when Martin Baturina put them ahead. After losing his balance, the midfielder recovered quickly, moved the ball onto his right foot and placed a composed finish into the bottom corner.

Leipzig attempted to respond through Antonio Nusa, Andrija Maksimovic and Marc Guiu, but Como goalkeeper Jean Butez dealt with the danger. Guiu also missed a significant chance when he headed wide from a promising position.

The home side remained in control and extended their advantage shortly before the interval. Baturina became provider, sending Douvikas through. The forward held off Castello Lukeba before finishing confidently past Vandevoordt.

Leipzig returned from half-time with greater attacking intent, but Como struck again soon afterwards.

A swift move involving Douvikas and Paz created the opening for Assane Diao, who finished across Vandevoordt and into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Como captain Lucas Da Cunha nearly added a fourth on the counter-attack when he broke into space with Vandevoordt out of position, but his volley went narrowly wide.

Leipzig immediately took advantage of that let-off. Andrija Maksimovic gave the visitors renewed hope with an excellent first-time effort from outside the penalty area.

However, Como did not allow Leipzig to build momentum. Cesc Fabregas’ team managed the remainder of the match with composure, avoiding unnecessary risks while their opponents struggled to produce clear chances.

Riddle Baku came closest to reducing the deficit further, but his effort flashed wide of the post.

Como continued to threaten whenever they counter-attacked and sealed an emphatic victory in added time. Maximo Perrone calmly picked out the corner to complete a memorable 4-1 result.

The win gives Fabregas’ side the ideal start to their Champions League campaign and extends their unbeaten opening to the 2026/27 season.

Leipzig, meanwhile, suffered another damaging defeat. Their demanding schedule continues with matches against Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
