Mamour Ndiaye under scrutiny after difficult outing in Saint-Etienne's defeat to Guingamp

Senegalese goalkeeper Mamour Ndiaye faces questions over his performances after making costly mistakes in AS Saint-Étienne’s 3-0 defeat to En Avant Guingamp in Ligue 2.

The 21-year-old started for the third consecutive match in the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Gautier Larsonneur, but endured a difficult evening at the Stade du Roudourou on Saturday.

Ndiaye had previously kept clean sheets against Red Star and Nantes, offering encouraging signs during his temporary spell as Saint-Étienne’s first-choice goalkeeper.

However, the trip to Guingamp proved a much tougher examination, with the hosts capitalising on defensive weaknesses to secure a convincing victory.

Guingamp opened the scoring in the 37th minute through Stanislas Kielt before Teddy Averlant doubled their advantage shortly after the interval with an outstanding long-range effort.

Ndiaye was criticised for his handling of Averlant’s strike, which beat him from approximately 30 metres.

His difficult afternoon continued in the 85th minute when an uncertain decision to leave his goal allowed Amadou Samoura to produce a delicate chip and complete the scoring.

Larsonneur’s absence creates a goalkeeping dilemma

Ndiaye’s performance has raised questions about Saint-Étienne’s goalkeeping situation, particularly with Larsonneur expected to remain unavailable for several more weeks because of injury.

The Senegalese youngster had taken advantage of the opportunity to establish himself between the posts, recording consecutive clean sheets against Red Star and Nantes.

However, his display against Guingamp has highlighted the challenge of maintaining consistency when faced with sustained opposition pressure.

According to match statistics reported by Peuple-Vert, 75 per cent of Guingamp’s shots on target resulted in goals.

Nevertheless, Ndiaye was not solely responsible for the defeat, with Saint-Étienne also struggling defensively and failing to provide sufficient attacking threat.

Ndiaye faces opportunity to respond against Laval

Saint-Étienne’s next assignment comes against Stade Lavallois on Saturday, November 7, giving the young goalkeeper an opportunity to respond to the criticism.

The coaching staff will assess his performance against Guingamp as they consider their options in goal during Larsonneur’s continued absence.

Ndiaye will hope to demonstrate that the difficult outing was only a temporary setback and convince the technical team that he can provide reliable cover for the injured first-choice goalkeeper.

His response against Laval could be important in determining his role during the coming weeks.
