Mathieu Polanski backs Mathieu Nguefack after Bundesliga debut

Mathieu Nguefack made his first Bundesliga start for Borussia Monchengladbach against SV 07 Elversberg, completing the entire match and contributing an assist in the opening half.

The 18-year-old midfielder also covered 12.04 kilometres, the highest distance recorded by any player on the pitch.

His performance was not flawless. Nguefack later lost possession in a dangerous area, but head coach Eugen Polanski refused to let that mistake overshadow an encouraging debut. “He played because he deserved it,” Polanski said, making clear that the teenager had earned his opportunity through his work.

Polanski admitted that the physical and mental demands of Nguefack’s first Bundesliga start were noticeable when training resumed. Although the youngster is used to covering ground, the speed of the match and the atmosphere inside the stadium created an additional challenge. “I believe he can and will do two or three things much better. We have to encourage him,” the coach explained.

Nguefack’s place beside Philipp Sander for Saturday’s visit to Freiburg remains undecided, with Kevin Stöger another option. Polanski said either player could start. “If he is in the starting lineup, then it is out of conviction,” he added.
