Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Sunderland reach EFL Cup last 16

Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Sunderland and Bradford City all progressed to the last 16 of the EFL Cup after a night without major upsets.

Bournemouth produced the biggest winning margin of the evening, beating Lincoln City 4-0 as Ryan Christie scored a hat-trick.

Christie opened the scoring in the seventh minute before adding his second in the 69th minute. He completed his treble two minutes from the end of normal time, with the fourth goal arriving in the 90th minute of the match.

The result ensured Bournemouth moved comfortably through to the next round, while Lincoln City were left to reflect on a heavy defeat against Premier League opposition.

Crystal Palace also advanced with a convincing victory, defeating Middlesbrough 3-0.

Jørgen Strand Larsen put Palace ahead in the 37th minute and doubled their advantage eight minutes after half-time. He then turned provider for Daichi Kamada, who completed the scoring in the 72nd minute.

There was a tighter contest between Hull City and Sunderland, with the visitors securing a 1-0 win. Chemsdine Talbi scored the only goal in the 71st minute.

The defeat meant Hull City conceded their first goal of the current season. Sunderland, meanwhile, held on to claim their place in the last 16.

Newcastle United needed a late goal to overcome Millwall. Joe Willock struck in the 81st minute to settle the tie and send Newcastle into the next round.

Bradford City came through an all-second-tier meeting with a 3-1 victory over Leyton Orient. The result completed the list of teams advancing from the latest round of fixtures.

The remaining matches will be played on Wednesday, Thursday and next week. The later fixtures include the sides that were involved in European competition this week.

Manchester City are the holders of the most recent edition of the competition, while Liverpool are the record winners, having lifted the trophy 10 times.

The EFL Cup, also known as the League Cup, remains one of English football’s major domestic knockout competitions. Its format continues to offer clubs from different levels the opportunity to meet, as illustrated by Bradford City’s win over Leyton Orient and the ties involving Premier League sides and lower-division opposition.

For Bournemouth, Palace and Newcastle, the night brought progress without the need for extra time, while Sunderland’s narrow success and Bradford City’s three-goal victory added variety to the latest set of results.
