Oswin Appollis transfer rumours dismissed by Orlando Pirates agent Lance Davids

Orlando Pirates forward Oswin Appollis is not currently known to be leaving the Soweto club, according to his agent Lance Davids, who has rejected reports linking the Bafana Bafana international with a move to Europe.

Davids told IOL Sport that speculation over a possible transfer was unfounded, saying: “I don’t know of anything. It’s only terrible rumours.”

Appollis had recently been linked with an unnamed Ligue 1 club, with reports suggesting that the French side had contacted the player, his agency and Orlando Pirates about a potential move during the current transfer window.

However, the Ligue 1 window closed on 1 September. That led to suggestions that Appollis could either remain with Orlando Pirates or move to another club on loan until January or the end of the season before completing a permanent transfer.

Davids’ comments appear to have poured cold water on those reports, with Appollis expected to remain with the Buccaneers for now. The 24-year-old has been pictured in action against Kaizer Chiefs forward Pule Mmodi as he continues his season with the Soweto giants.

Appollis made a relatively quiet start to the campaign. Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou said the forward and several of his team-mates were still dealing with fatigue after helping Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.

The attacker has since begun to regain his form. He has scored twice and provided two assists in the Betway Premiership, and will be aiming to make an important contribution as Orlando Pirates prepare to defend their crown against Mamelodi Sundowns in next month’s MTN8 final.

Before then, Appollis’ immediate focus will be on the CAF Champions League. Orlando Pirates host La Cure Waves in the second leg of their preliminary qualifying tie on Saturday, having drawn 0-0 in Mauritius.

The Bafana Bafana number seven was also reportedly monitored by FC Porto after his performances at the FIFA World Cup in June and July. The Portuguese club was alleged to have made an offer worth R75 million.

A departure would represent a significant blow for Orlando Pirates, who have already lost high-profile players including Relebohile Mofokeng and Patrick Maswanganyi.

Appollis’ importance to the club was underlined last season when he narrowly missed out on the PSL Footballer of the Season award. His ability to score, create chances and operate in attacking areas has made him one of the club’s key players.

Despite the reported interest from abroad, Davids has dismissed the transfer speculation and there is currently no indication that Appollis is preparing to leave Orlando Pirates. The forward will instead be expected to continue his recovery of the form that made him one of South Africa’s most prominent attacking players.
