Thapelo Maseko earns Danish Superliga Team of the Week place after Copenhagen brace

Thapelo Maseko has been named in the Danish Superliga Team of the Week after scoring twice in FC Copenhagen’s 5-0 away victory over Odense Boldklub.

The Bafana Bafana and FC Copenhagen attacker produced his first full start for the club in the league match against OB, marking the occasion with a brace as Copenhagen claimed a convincing win on the road.

Maseko had initially made an impression through three appearances as a substitute. Those cameo roles were enough to earn him a place in the starting line-up, and the 23-year-old responded with a decisive performance in front of goal.

His two goals came during a run of three matches and helped FC Copenhagen move to the top of the Danish Superliga table. The club had won six of its opening seven league games, with their only defeat coming during that initial run.

Maseko’s performances have now been recognised with selection for the league’s Team of the Week. He is included alongside FC Copenhagen team-mate Junnosuke Suzuki.

The recognition represents a rapid start to Maseko’s time in Denmark. The former Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United player had been restricted to substitute appearances before being handed his opportunity from the beginning against Odense Boldklub.

He made full use of that opportunity, scoring twice as FC Copenhagen swept aside their opponents 5-0. The result strengthened the club’s position at the summit and added further significance to Maseko’s first full FCK start.

For Bafana Bafana, the winger’s early form at club level provides another positive development. Maseko has quickly moved from making brief appearances off the bench to delivering a match-winning contribution in the starting line-up.

His inclusion in the Danish Superliga’s best XI for the week follows that breakthrough performance and places him among the division’s standout players from the latest round of fixtures. Suzuki’s selection means FC Copenhagen have two representatives in the team.

Maseko’s progress has also drawn attention because of how quickly his role has changed. After three cameos, he was trusted to start a league match, and his goals helped turn the fixture into a 5-0 victory while maintaining Copenhagen’s strong opening record.

The player has previously been linked with a dream first full appearance for FC Copenhagen after making an impact from the bench. That opportunity arrived against OB, where his finishing played a central part in the emphatic result.
