Kaizer Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel closing in on unwanted booking record

Kaizer Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel is approaching unprecedented disciplinary figures as he begins his third season with the club.

The 30-year-old has collected 20 yellow cards during his 64 appearances for Kaizer Chiefs, meaning he has been booked, on average, once every three matches.

Miguel has already been cautioned twice in six appearances during the 2026/27 season. His latest booking came against Siwelele on Sunday evening, and another yellow card would result in his first suspension of the campaign.

The Angola-Portugal defender has played every minute of Kaizer Chiefs’ season so far and is entering the final year of his contract, with extension discussions likely to be on the agenda.

Miguel’s time at the club began with a particularly high rate of bookings. He was suspended after receiving four yellow cards and was then sent off after only six matches.

His disciplinary record eventually reached eight yellow cards, in addition to the red card he received during Kaizer Chiefs’ Carling KnockOut Cup defeat by Mamelodi Sundowns.

There was then evidence that Miguel had improved his discipline. His next four yellow cards were spread across 21 matches, a significant reduction in the frequency of his cautions.

At the time, Miguel defended his approach and said his bookings were often the result of putting the team’s needs ahead of his own disciplinary record.

“I always say that I will repeat the same cards, I will have the same cards because all the bookings that I have were to help the team and not silly cards.

“Most of them it was to help the team and sometimes as a defender I get exposed a lot and I have to decide the ball, the man, both…it’s tough to be a defender,” said Miguel, adding that he doesn’t regret any of his actions.

“I will always put the team first,” he said at the time.

His yellow-card tally rose to 10 last season, leaving him to serve two suspensions in domestic competition.

With two cautions already recorded this term, Miguel’s total in Kaizer Chiefs colours has now reached 20. His current rate means he is on course to add further suspensions if the bookings continue.

The consistency of his disciplinary record has also placed him among the club’s most frequently booked players in recent years. Former Kaizer Chiefs players Morgan Gould and Andrew Rabutla, who were also known for collecting cautions, did not reach Miguel’s current level across any three-year period.

Miguel’s record reflects the demands of his position. He has become a regular presence in the referee’s notebook while operating as a physical defender, particularly when he is forced to choose between challenging for the ball, stopping an opponent or attempting both.

The immediate concern for Kaizer Chiefs is his next booking. If it comes during the current season, Miguel will miss his first match through suspension. His availability will also be a factor as the club considers whether to extend the contract of a player who has remained ever-present this term.
