Da Cruz praises Mmodi’s impact in new Kaizer Chiefs role

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has praised the adaptability of winger Pule Mmodi after the 33-year-old made an important contribution while operating as a makeshift left wing-back.

Mmodi has been used in an unfamiliar defensive role during a difficult period for Amakhosi, with a serious injury crisis affecting the club’s regular full-backs. Despite being deployed away from his natural position, he has fitted into the team’s back-five system and started three successive matches.

The versatile player has also scored once this season, underlining his value to Da Cruz’s side during a demanding stretch of the campaign.

Da Cruz gave his assessment of Mmodi’s performances at a Naturena media briefing after Kaizer Chiefs secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Siwelele FC on Sunday night. The French coach addressed journalists through Julien Le Heran, the club’s Head of Sports Science within the technical team.

“He has been here for three matches,” Da Cruz said, adding that the former Uthongathi player provides a useful alternative when Kaizer Chiefs adopt a five-man defensive system.

“The advantage we have is that we can play in two different systems, and in the five-man system, he fits in perfectly.”

Mmodi’s ability to operate in more than one position has become particularly valuable while Kaizer Chiefs manage their defensive absences. Although he is known primarily as a pacy winger, he has adapted to the demands of playing as a left wing-back and has helped the team maintain its shape in the new formation.

The club’s decision to retain him is also reflected in his continued importance to the squad. Kaizer Chiefs formally exercised a one-year contract extension for the 33-year-old after his initial agreement expired.

The situation creates a selection dilemma for Da Cruz ahead of the next match against Polokwane City on Saturday, 12 September. Natural left-backs, including Bradley Cross, are gradually returning to full fitness, giving the coach the option of restoring a recognised defender to the position.

However, Mmodi’s recent displays could make it difficult to leave him out of the role. Keeping the wide player on the flank would allow Kaizer Chiefs to preserve the tactical momentum generated by their current system, while switching back to a traditional full-back would represent a more conventional approach as defensive options become available.

For now, Da Cruz has made clear that Mmodi’s versatility gives Amakhosi flexibility. The winger has shown that he can contribute even when asked to perform duties outside his usual position, and his recent run of starts has strengthened his case for further involvement.
