Konrad Laimer: Bayern Munich midfielder sets sights on Champions League glory

Bayern Munich midfielder Konrad Laimer says the club must aim to win every available trophy, with Champions League success a central ambition as Vincent Kompany’s team begin their European campaign.

The German club have won the Bundesliga 13 times in the past 14 seasons, underlining their dominance at home. But for Bayern Munich, domestic achievements are not considered sufficient on their own, with European success regarded as the ultimate measure of the team’s ambitions.

Laimer said the players share Kompany’s determination to compete for every honour this season and are prepared to work towards that objective every day.

“When you’re at FC Bayern, you always want to win every single title,” Laimer said.

“The Champions League is part of that, the domestic trophies are part of that. That’s what we train for every day. Personally, I’ll do everything in my power to achieve that.”

Bayern Munich’s Champions League campaign starts on Thursday against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt at the Allianz Arena.

Kompany’s team go into the match having already made an encouraging start to the season. They won the German Super Cup by defeating Borussia Dortmund before recording an emphatic 5-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.

The Champions League is expected to present a significantly greater challenge, but Bayern Munich will be determined to improve on last season’s run in the competition.

They reached the semi-finals last term, only to be eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain, who went on to win the trophy.

Laimer’s comments reflect the standards expected at Bayern Munich, where regular success in Germany has not reduced the pressure to compete for major European honours. The club’s recent record in the Bundesliga has made another domestic title a familiar objective, but the Champions League remains a priority for Kompany’s squad.

The match against Bodo/Glimt provides Bayern Munich with the first opportunity to demonstrate whether they can turn their early-season form into another serious challenge in Europe. Their victories over Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart have given them momentum, while their immediate target is to begin the Champions League campaign with a strong performance at home.

For Laimer, however, the ambition extends beyond a positive opening result. He has made clear that Bayern Munich’s players are working towards a season in which every trophy is pursued, with the Champions League firmly included among those ambitions.
