Mamelodi Sundowns in advanced talks to sign former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele

Mamelodi Sundowns have made former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele a high-priority transfer target, with discussions over a possible move understood to be at an advanced stage.

Cele ended his contract with Kaizer Chiefs by mutual agreement on Monday night, bringing to a close an 18-month spell with the club. His departure followed the arrival of new coach Fernando Da Cruz, who informed the midfielder that he was not part of his plans.

The 29-year-old had already been left out of Chiefs’ pre-season tour of Spain and had spent several weeks training separately from the first-team squad while negotiations over his exit continued.

He is now in contention to remain in the South African top flight by joining another of the country’s leading clubs.

Mamelodi Sundowns have held talks with Cele about a potential move, with the African champions keen to add further experience and depth to their midfield. The Brazilians are understood to have identified the former Chiefs player as a serious option as they strengthen their squad for a demanding campaign.

Sundowns’ need for additional cover has increased following the tragic death of Jayden Adams shortly after the FIFA World Cup. Their involvement in both domestic and continental competitions has also placed greater emphasis on maintaining strength across the squad.

Cele would bring considerable experience to Chloorkop. He played in Europe before returning to South Africa and signing for Kaizer Chiefs, although his time with Amakhosi lasted only about 18 months.

His position at the club changed after Da Cruz took charge. The Frenchman indicated that he had enough players available in Cele’s role, effectively making the midfielder surplus to requirements.

Sundowns have already been active in the free-agent market. They recently signed former Orlando Pirates right-back Deano Van Rooyen, and Cele could become the latest experienced player to arrive without a club.

No agreement has been confirmed, but negotiations are believed to be progressing positively. Sundowns are understood to be seriously considering a move to bring Cele to Chloorkop.

The midfielder’s availability has created an opportunity for the reigning African champions to reinforce their squad without a transfer fee, although the final terms of any deal remain to be settled.

Cele’s departure from Kaizer Chiefs follows a difficult period in which he was removed from the first-team set-up and excluded from the club’s preparations in Spain. A move to Sundowns would give him the chance to restart his career at a side competing on multiple fronts.
