Kylian Mbappe says record World Cup campaign makes him a Ballon d’Or contender

Kylian Mbappe believes his record-breaking 2026 World Cup and prolific season for Real Madrid have put him in a strong position to win the Ballon d’Or for the first time.

The France forward scored 10 goals as his side reached the semi-finals, taking his career World Cup total to 22 – a record for the competition. He also scored 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid last season, although the Spanish club finished the campaign without a major trophy.

“When you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, you’re associated with these awards,” Mbappe said. “I made a lot of history in the most important competition (World Cup). This might be a good year to win the Ballon d’Or.”

Mbappe, 27, has previously finished as high as third in the Ballon d’Or voting. He said he believes his individual performances justify his claim to being regarded as the world’s leading player, while acknowledging that the final decision rests with journalists.

“I always think I’m the best,” he said. “Everyone has their own opinion. This year might be a good one to win the Ballon d’Or, but it’s voted on by journalists, and they’ll choose.”

The forward’s record includes eight consecutive domestic Golden Boots, two World Cup Golden Boots and two Champions League scoring titles. Since joining Real Madrid, he has scored 90 goals in 107 matches.

His case is weakened by the absence of major club honours during his time in Madrid. Real Madrid have gone two seasons without a major trophy, while Mbappe’s former club Paris Saint-Germain have won consecutive Champions League titles since his departure.

Asked whether that lack of silverware could affect his chances, Mbappe said: “I can’t change it. The truth is that I really don’t care.”

His attention now turns to Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign. The club host Inter Milan following Friday’s 1-0 defeat by Real Betis.

Mbappe also defended his defensive contribution and that of Vinicius Junior, while accepting that both players still have aspects of their game to improve. He also praised new coach Jose Mourinho for bringing a strong winning mentality to the team.

The Ballon d’Or is awarded based on journalists’ votes, meaning Mbappe cannot determine the outcome himself. However, he believes the combination of his World Cup achievements, personal scoring record and status at Real Madrid gives him the strongest claim of his career.

His 22 World Cup goals have already secured his place in the competition’s history, while his continued scoring at club level has strengthened his argument. Despite Real Madrid’s lack of major silverware, Mbappe says this may finally be the year he wins the individual prize.
