Barcelona’s impressive start against Valencia was overshadowed by an injury to Eric Garcia, who was forced to leave the field before the half-hour mark after an accidental blow to his nose in a collision with Rodri.
Barcelona had taken a 2-0 lead at Mestalla through Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez, appearing in control of the match from the opening stages. However, their progress was disrupted when Garcia was struck during an unintentional clash with Rodri.
The Barcelona central defender was unable to continue and was replaced by Jules Kounde after a drinks break. The change represented an unwelcome setback for a side that had dominated the contest before Garcia’s departure.
Initial images suggested the injury was not serious, although Garcia may have suffered a deviated nasal septum. He left the pitch on foot alongside doctor Bruna, who subsequently explained the nature of the injury to the rest of the Barcelona players.
The incident has revived concerns surrounding Garcia’s previous problems with injuries to his nose. The defender suffered a fracture last season and was required to play several matches while wearing a protective mask.
Garcia sustained that earlier injury during Barcelona’s Champions League meeting with Club Brugge at the beginning of November last season. He wore the mask for several weeks before recovering and returning to action without the same protection.
Barcelona will therefore await further assessment of Garcia’s condition, with the early indications offering some reassurance but the possibility of another nasal problem remaining. The defender’s treatment and the decision to replace him ensured that his injury became the main concern for Barcelona, despite the team’s two-goal advantage.
The substitution also altered the defensive setup during a match in which Barcelona had initially imposed themselves on Valencia. Garcia had been able to continue only until the drinks interval after the collision, but the medical staff and coaching team decided that he could not safely remain on the field.
For now, the extent of the damage is unclear. The possibility of a deviated septum has been raised, while the images available immediately after the incident did not indicate a severe injury. Garcia’s previous experience, however, means Barcelona will be mindful of the possibility that he could once again require protection for his nose.
The defender’s earlier recovery eventually allowed him to resume normal football, but the latest blow gives Barcelona another fitness issue to monitor after what had been a highly positive opening against Valencia.
