Kruger United add former Chippa United midfielder Ayabulela Konqobe to major squad rebuild

Kruger United have continued their major recruitment drive by signing former Chippa United midfielder Ayabulela Konqobe on a one-year contract, as the newly promoted side prepares for its first season in the Betway Premiership.

The move was confirmed by sporting director Elasto Kapowezha on Friday, with Konqobe becoming the latest of more than 15 new arrivals at the Mpumalanga club.

“Yes, he’s signed with us for a season,” Kapowezha confirmed to Soccer Laduma.

Konqobe had been searching for a new club after leaving Chippa United at the end of last season. His departure came as a surprise given the important role he played for the Chilli Boys during the previous campaign.

The midfielder featured in 24 league matches for Chippa United last term and missed only six games throughout the season. That record made him one of the club’s most dependable and consistent performers.

His arrival at Kruger United adds further experience to a squad that has undergone a significant transformation before its first campaign in the top flight. The scale of the recruitment underlines the club’s determination to establish itself at the highest level.

Among the other players to join Kruger United are Fierce Ntwari, Sanele Tshabalala, Lwanda Mbanjwa, Kwanda Mngonyama, Katlego Mohamme, Mlungisi Zwane, Shane Saralina, Motsie Matima, Tatenda Tavengwa, Phathutshedzo Musekwa, Thendo Mukumela, Tumelo Mmakgolane, Sidney Fakude, Wonderboy Makhubu, Thuso Moleleki and Asekho Tiwani.

Kruger have also secured the services of Sundowns talent, adding to the club’s growing list of recruits as they attempt to build a squad capable of competing in the Betway Premiership.

The number of signings reflects the ambition of the Mpumalanga club, but it also creates an immediate challenge for the coaching staff. With so many players arriving at the same time, Kruger must quickly develop cohesion and an understanding among a largely reworked squad.

That process will be particularly important as the club seeks to move away from the bottom of the table. While the recruitment drive has given Kruger a significantly different squad from the one that earned promotion, questions remain over how quickly the new group can settle and perform together.

Konqobe’s signing is the latest step in that overhaul. His regular involvement for Chippa United last season suggests Kruger have added a player with recent top-flight experience as they seek to survive and establish themselves in the division.
