Alice Soto strike gives Mexico control against Benin at U20 Women’s World Cup

Mexico established a deserved 1-0 half-time lead over Benin in the opening round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Saturday, 5 September 2026, at Stade de Widzew in Łodz.

Alice Soto made the difference in the 21st minute, finishing a move created by Michel Fong to give Mexico the breakthrough. The goal reflected the balance of the first half, with Mexico dominating possession and repeatedly putting the Benin defence under pressure.

Benin, known as the Amazones, struggled to impose themselves during the opening 45 minutes. Mexico controlled 81% of the ball and used that sustained pressure to dictate the tempo of the game.

The Mexican side’s dominance was also reflected in the number of attempts. Benin conceded about 15 shots while creating very little at the opposite end, leaving their defence with the difficult task of resisting a constant series of attacks.

Despite being under pressure for long periods, the Benin players have remained determined and have managed to keep the deficit to one goal. That narrow margin leaves the Amazones with an opportunity to fight their way back into the contest after the interval.

They will need to find answers during the break if they are to contain Mexico’s attacking waves in the second half. The next 45 minutes could prove decisive for a Benin side hoping to secure a historic result in Group A.

Mexico’s first-half advantage came from their ability to turn territorial and possession dominance into a goal, while Benin’s immediate priority was to stay within reach. With only one goal separating the teams, the match remains open in terms of the final outcome, although Mexico have so far been the clearly stronger side.

The second half will therefore test whether Benin can withstand the pressure more effectively and create greater attacking opportunities of their own. Mexico, meanwhile, will look to maintain the authority they showed before the break and extend their lead.
