Manchester City edge Coventry City as Erling Haaland heads Pep Guardiola’s side in front

Erling Haaland’s first-half header gave Manchester City a 1-0 lead against Coventry City in the third week of the Premier League, although goalkeeper Carl Rushworth kept Coventry in the contest with a series of important saves.

Antoine Semenyo created the opening goal, delivering a cross from the right towards the centre of the penalty area. Haaland met it with a powerful header which flew into the left side of the net.

Haaland provides the breakthrough

The goal was Manchester City’s first of the match, with the forward also going close on several other occasions. Haaland fired towards goal from inside the area, but Rushworth reacted brilliantly to deny him what would have been a second goal.

Haaland later produced another strong effort from close range, forcing Rushworth into another excellent stop. The save resulted in a corner for City.

Coventry also threatened before the interval. Taiwo Awoniyi collected the ball inside the area and struck a powerful effort which narrowly missed the right-hand post, allowing Manchester City to restart with a goal-kick.

Jack Rudoni then directed a well-placed header towards goal, but the attempt was saved and went behind for a Coventry corner.

City dominated possession, recording 85% compared with Coventry’s 15% after the opening 15 minutes. Despite that control, the number of shots was level at four apiece after half an hour.

Rayan Cherki came close to extending Manchester City’s advantage after creating space for himself and shooting from close range. His effort struck the left post before bouncing out of play.

Cherki also delivered a set-piece into the penalty area, but Coventry’s defence dealt with it comfortably. Elliot Anderson’s corner was cleared as City continued to apply pressure.

City control the game

Manchester City repeatedly worked the ball through short passes in and around Coventry’s defensive midfield. Ruben Dias showed composure in possession when he controlled a precise short pass from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma with his first touch, allowing City to begin another attack.

Iliman Ndiaye sent a cross from the left which struck a team-mate and went out for a goal-kick. Later, he delivered a more accurate ball into the area, but Rushworth left his goal at the right moment and claimed it cleanly.

Semenyo was caught offside on two occasions, including one decision which came by an extremely narrow margin. Enzo Fernandez also tried to make an impact, seeing one shot from outside the box go high after Coventry partially cleared Semenyo’s cross. Another Fernandez effort from the middle of the area hit a defender and moved away from danger.

Coventry’s defensive organisation prevented several attempts by City to run through the centre. Ephron Mason-Clark was penalised for a careless challenge after attempting to win the ball, while Aurele Amenda was also booked for a foul on Ndiaye. Amenda had earlier conceded a free-kick for a challenge on Fernandez, and was again penalised after intervening on Josko Gvardiol.

The referee, Paul Tierney, added one minute of time at the end of the first half. The second half then began, with Manchester City holding a narrow lead through Haaland’s header. Coventry’s listed players also included Milan van Ewijk and Matt Grimes.
