Bournemouth set unwanted Premier League record after late Newcastle United draw

Bournemouth became the first team in Premier League history to fail to win any of their opening three matches despite taking the lead in each game after Newcastle United fought back for a 2-2 draw.

Bournemouth appeared on course for victory at 2-0, but Newcastle United scored twice in the second half to claim a point and extend their opponents’ difficult start to the season.

The result means Bournemouth have now dropped points in the final stages of all three of their matches. They lost to Manchester City after holding the lead until the 81st minute, drew 1-1 with Everton after conceding in the 90th minute plus one, and were denied another win by Newcastle United’s late equaliser.

Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the perfect start after only nine minutes. He met a shot and redirected it with his foot into the net to put the home side ahead.

Bournemouth doubled their advantage in the 35th minute when Malick Thiaw scored an own goal, leaving Newcastle United with a two-goal deficit before half-time.

However, Newcastle United responded almost immediately. Just one minute and 20 seconds after Bournemouth’s second goal, Harvey Barnes reduced the arrears with an excellent curled finish from inside the penalty area.

The visitors continued to search for an equaliser and were rewarded in the 88th minute. Substitute Jacob Ramsey completed the comeback with a low shot from inside the 18-yard box, making it 2-2 and ensuring the points were shared.

For Bournemouth, the draw represented another missed opportunity after they had built a commanding lead. Their failure to protect that advantage also created an unwanted piece of Premier League history, with the club now the first not to win any of their first three matches despite being ahead in every one of them.

The two dropped points leave Bournemouth 14th in the table with two points. They have taken those points from their draw with Everton and the draw with Newcastle United, while their other result was the defeat by Manchester City.

Newcastle United move into sixth place with five points from their first three matches. Their record consists of two draws and one victory.

Although Bournemouth controlled the scoreline for much of the game, Newcastle United’s late pressure again exposed the vulnerability that has defined their opening fixtures. The result also continued the pattern of Bournemouth surrendering promising positions in the closing stages, while Newcastle United left with a point after recovering from 2-0 down.
