Ngwenya scores in sixth successive game as AmaZulu FC win KwaZulu-Natal derby

Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya extended his extraordinary scoring run to six consecutive matches as AmaZulu FC beat provincial rivals Richards Bay FC 2-1 in the Betway Premiership at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Friday night.

The AmaZulu FC striker struck in the 52nd minute, maintaining his record of scoring in every match his side has played since the start of the campaign.

Ngwenya had already made history by scoring in each of AmaZulu FC’s opening five matches across all competitions. That achievement made him the first player in PSL history to find the net in each of his team’s first five games of a season.

His goal against the Natal Rich Boyz extended that record to six matches and further underlined his impressive beginning to the campaign.

The forward has now scored eight goals in all competitions, establishing himself as one of the leading contributors to AmaZulu FC’s strong start to the season.

AmaZulu FC, however, had to withstand a determined response from Richards Bay FC before securing victory in the KwaZulu-Natal derby.

Richards Bay FC drew level in the 80th minute when Moses Mthembu converted from the penalty spot. Their hopes of completing a comeback were short-lived, though, as Nkosikhona Radebe restored AmaZulu FC’s advantage only two minutes later.

That proved to be the decisive goal, with AmaZulu FC holding on to claim the derby victory and another valuable three points.

The result also maintained the spotlight on Ngwenya, whose scoring form has become a defining feature of AmaZulu FC’s early-season campaign.

Head coach Arthur Zwane continues to challenge the striker to improve, despite the record-breaking run and his prolific return in front of goal.

“I don’t want to put him under pressure so we’ll take it game by game but I want him to score every game because he’s a striker. Ngwenya has the potential to score 20 goals a season, I just hope he stays fit this season, because if we keep creating chances for him, he’ll put them away,” he said at the post match presser.

For Ngwenya, the victory provided another significant landmark. He had already set a PSL record by scoring in each of his team’s first five matches across all competitions, and his latest effort has extended that achievement to six successive games.

AmaZulu FC’s win was secured only after they responded swiftly to Richards Bay FC’s equaliser, while Ngwenya’s continued consistency ensured he remained at the centre of another important result for Usuthu.
